Discourse — A major open-source discussion platform built around durable, searchable conversation rather than real-time chat. Essential reference material for anyone thinking about forum architecture.

Circle — A hosted platform popular with creators, educators and membership businesses, combining discussions with courses, events and paid membership.

Mighty Networks — Discussion spaces, events, courses, memberships and mobile, aimed at where community software overlaps the creator and education markets.
